Where is Johnstone?
The town of Johnstone is in Scotland’s west central Lowlands, in Renfrewshire.
The town is 3 miles (5 km) to the west of the nearby town of Paisley, 12 miles (19 km) to the west of central Glasgow, and 12 miles (19 km) to the northeast of Kilwinning. Johnstone is part of the Greater Glasgow Urban Area.
The majority of Johnstone was a planned community that grew up around Easter Cochrane house, later known as Johnstone Castle, the ancestral home of the Houston family, who took their name from the nearby village of Houston. The town centre was designed in 1782 by George Houstoun, the Laird.
After the last Laird passed away in 1931, Johnstone Castle deteriorated before being mostly destroyed in 1950, the remaining tower is now a private home. Two housing estates, Johnstone Castle and Cochrane Castle, now stand where the former grounds once did.
The Johnstone History Museum, which opened in 2008, made history by being the first museum ever to be housed inside a supermarket. The new Town Hall was finished in 2015. The Cochrane Castle Golf Club, which once held the world record for the longest hole, is a part of Cochrane Castle.
